Our School Library

We are very fortunate to have such a great library in our school. There is a very large selection of books from Kindergarten to Grade 9 level. All of the libraries in the Prairie Rose Division are linked through the Shortgrass Library System. This means we can share books from school to school via a delivery system.

Students in kindergarten to grade 7 have scheduled library classes where they take out books, learn library skills and have stories read to them. Grade 8 and 9 students are welcome in the library when they have a moment, to sign out books. The library also has the Accelerated Reading Program available and teachers often use this in conjunction with their LanguageReading programs. The library arranges an author visit every year. Authors like Sigmund Brouwer, David Paulsen and Jacqueline Guest have presented their books to us and we have enjoyed their enthusiasm for literature very much.

Library Highlights

We have many extra-curricular programs run through the library.

  • For grades K-6 we have 4 holiday crafts throughout the year for those who are interested. We have made edible Christmas trees, spooky Halloween mobiles, Valentines cookies, and Easter goodie bags to name just a few.
  • Every year we have two Scholastic Book fairs. These book-fairs focus on literacy in the home and school. We have contests for free books, school decorating contests, free draws and surprise visitors like Franklin or Clifford.
  • A junior-high book club meets once a week to discuss books we are reading. We pick a book, read it at about the same pace and discuss what we liked didnt like about the book. Snacks are necessary for us to keep up our strength! This book club, fundraises with bake sales and book sales to raise money for the many books we read.
